I have some questions regarding animation cels and the materials required to create them

-What material was used for layout/background, and what was the typical size?
-Were layout/background painted with acrylic?
-What type of paint was typically used to paint characters (cel vinyl,acrylic)?
-Is there an alternative transparent material that could be uses for cels?
-Where might i find these materials in this day and age?
