Getting back into some motion studies. Usually on mondays it has taken a while for my mind to get into the flow of drawing again after the weekend. But today I could jump right into it fortunately.

Here's the finished motion study. These can really give your mind a work out. I have to admit that drawing a motion with drapery seemed a bit daunting at first, but I reminded myself that the same principles of movement for the body also apply to the drapery. You just need to analyse how it's reacting to the energy of the movement and simplify it into forceful shapes to keep it fluid during the whole motion.

More fun stuff! I'm still learning more about the design of the human body everyday I study it.

Last year I decided to start doing my gesture drawings sessions digitally and collect them in a manual. Actually that was not my intention at the start. I just wanted some digital gesture drawings to use for my tutorials among other things. It took some getting used to in the beginning since I was accustomed to do them on paper. As I started to produce more pages and other artists seemed to like it I thought: “Hey, why not make a PDF file out of these so other artists can download them and keep them around as inspiration?” And so the Gesture Drawing Demonstrations manual was born. And today I drew page 181.

Even in this large collection of drawings, there are a select few that stand out as my favorites. I challenged myself to pick out my top five and explain why they stand out for me. For more, you can visit: http://www.swendly.com/tutorials.html
