Dick Lundy began in the ink & paint department at the Disney Studio on Hyperion in the summer of 1929. In just a few months, he was promoted to inbetweening. With the beginning of 1930, Lundy was moved up to animator to help get production back on schedule after the departure of Ub Iwerks.
As an animator, Dick animated several classic shorts including Three Little Pigs and Orphans Benefit. After his work on the feature film Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Lundy was invited to direct cartoon shorts beginning with Sea Scouts in 1939. He directed many of the Donald Duck cartoons from 1939 to 1943.
Lundy left Disney in 1943 to animate for Walter Lantz, but Dick quickly moved back up to directing duties for Andy Panda, Woody Woodpecker, and the Swing Symphonies shorts. When the Lantz studio closed in 1948, Lundy moved to Wolff Productions to make commercials.
By 1950, Dick moved to MGM for more money and directing work. He took over Tex Avery’s unit for a time, and directed Caballero Droopy as well as Barney Bear shorts.
He went to Hanna-Barbera in 1959 where he animated The Flintstones, Yogi Bear, Scooby Doo, and many other television shows. Taking a brief break from the studio, Dick animated for Ralph Bakshi’s Fritz the Cat, but otherwise, stayed at H-B until retiring in 1973.
Although retired, he kept busy freelancing for several years until moving to San Diego County.
